You know Sarah as PiperWai co-founder and former lemonade-stand haver. But do you know her favorite food? Unless you're a family member or close friend, probably not. (Even Team PiperWai didn't know Sarah's top food choice.)
Food isn't Sarah's only interest, though. She works hard at PiperWai HQ, dipping her toes into every possible area in the company. Find out more about what she does, why she loves being an entrepreneur and the most embarrassing concert she's ever been to.
Who are you and what do you do at PiperWai?
Sarah Ribner, co-founder of PiperWai and wearer of all hats. I dabble in marketing, creative direction, wholesale, business development, sales, exhibiting, HR, product development, and legal. Whew!
That’s cool. So, what do you like about this gig?
One of the best things about my job is hearing strangers from across the country (and worldwide) telling us that a product we used to handcraft in a community kitchen is transforming their lives and their confidence.
“With PiperWai, I can go all day and not have to worry about if I smell or not. I’m so hooked.”
"I have been struggling for years to find a natural deodorant that actually works for me…my only regret is not knowing about PiperWai until now.”
“I am in love. I don’t remember how I found this product, but I am thanking the stars above that I have.”
These are just a few out of thousands of examples of the incredible support our customers have shown.
Did you ever think deodorant would be such an important part of your life?
Growing up, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak, but it wasn’t until PiperWai that I had the guts to take on building a company from scratch. Up until Jess and I paired up to create the PiperWai brand 3.5 years ago, I had no idea that my life would revolve around deodorant or that I would know so much about armpits.
Even though the physical deodorant is integral to my life and career, the product represents so much more. It represents a lifestyle that prioritizes health, wellness and the choice to use clean products on ourselves and our loved ones.
When did you fully commit yourself to wearing PiperWai?
Over four years ago!
When I left my job to apply for grad school, I took a volunteering position at an elementary in school in Central America. I also traveled a bit throughout South America, giving me the opportunity to test out the first deodorant formula in completely remote areas. It was during this time that Jess and I decided to start selling the natural deodorant. After I returned home, we set to work and created our company, PiperWai, to provide consumers with a healthy, effective alternative to one of the most controversial personal-care products. We also decided to use this product to promote wellness and healthy living, something that both of us value tremendously.
Which option do you use most? The jar or the stick?
The jar, mostly for sentimental reasons! It’s the first product we ever sold, and it’s the formula we used to handcraft in a community kitchen in Philadelphia before the brand took off. Each product has its benefits, but at the end of the day, they work equally well.
What are professional achievements you are proud of?
Turning a $2,000 loan into an internationally recognized brand with my childhood friend. My business partner, Jess, and I started PiperWai as a passion project and a desire to lead healthier lifestyles. About a year into running our business, I took a leap of faith by clicking on a link (that my mom actually found) to Shark Tank casting and subsequently putting my life on hold for several months for the opportunity to pitch PiperWai to a panel of Sharks and more than 10 million Americans.
What’s your favorite animal?
Dogs, specifically my red-tri Toy Australian Shepherd. I personally believe she’s her own category of animal… I mean, she does have very cat-like tendencies. You can follow her adventures @cocoaussiegal.
The entire PiperWai team would assume fun-sized 365 Brand potato chips, but I like to think I’m a little more cultured than that. My favorite food is homemade basil pesto (and yes, fun-sized potato chips).
What are your hobbies?
Cooking. I joined a CSA this summer, so I’ve been trying all these new recipes for fresh, organic, seasonal veggies.
I also love making products for my new home – my current obsession is homemade coconut wax candles, aromatherapy room spray, and all-purpose cleaner.
Tell us the most embarrassing concert you’ve ever been to.
Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time Tour with my mom in 1999. We walked up to the ticket counter and got last-minute row 5 seats. Did I feel VIP? Yes!
Outside of your job, what are your passions?
Traveling, cooking, historical fiction, education, mentoring, and overseeing my puppy’s surprisingly busy social life.
Want to be done now?
I could keep going, but I have to get back to work on PiperWai.
