Celebrate Juneteenth with PiperWai!

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865. You may have also heard about this celebration under other names such as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Black Independence Day. On June 17, 2021, Congress passed a resolution cementing Juneteenth as a national holiday. 

As a black owned company, PiperWai strives towards making sure we set a standard of inclusivity and equity. Juneteenth is a perfect example of how far we have come and how far we still need to go to ensure that the black community is supported and is given the proper resources and opportunities to blossom. Last year, we highlighted our favorite black-owned brands helping their communities while also protecting the environment, which you could find here. This year, we’re celebrating a movement in our industry called the Fifteen Percent Pledge! 

In the words of the Team who created the Fifteen Percent Pledge: “[The Pledge] is a call to action for major retailers and corporations to join us in creating sustainable and supportive ecosystems for Black-owned businesses to succeed. We work with companies to comprehensively re-evaluate their org structures, ways of working, funding, and resourcing in order to implement meaningful change and create greater equity for Black businesses.” The Pledge asks retailers to dedicate 15% of their shelf space to black-owned brands.
